Ambrose was the oldest member and the only one who was not an engineer. He wrote maintenance manuals for a living and came to Dayton with a contract to write three of them. He wrote all three and stayed for the band.
He played a drum kit, a pair of timpani and a set of tuned bells. He wrote the percussion parts in a ruled notebook with the same numbered-paragraph layout he used for manuals. Paragraph 3.2.1 of the second album reads: Timpani. Tune to D. Strike once.
He counted every time signature aloud in rehearsal and never on stage. The band says it could hear him anyway.
He went back to Norwich in 1989 and, like Giles, flew back for everything until the end.
Present status. Retired to Norfolk. Still writes manuals, for model railways.
